My Approach to Therapy
Therapy That Works With Your Brain, Not Against It
Many ADHD and autistic adults come to therapy after years of trying to fit into approaches that never quite felt right.
Some have attended therapy before but left feeling misunderstood. Others found themselves constantly explaining their experiences or wondering why strategies that worked for other people didn’t seem to work for them.
Often, the problem isn’t the person.
It’s that the therapy wasn’t adapted to the way a neurodivergent brain experiences the world.
That is where my approach is different.
Rather than expecting you to adapt to therapy, I adapt therapy to you.
A Neurodiversity-Affirming Approach
Being neurodiversity-affirming means far more than recognising that someone has ADHD or is autistic.
It means understanding the unique ways neurodivergent people experience emotions, relationships, communication, sensory input and everyday life.
Together we may explore experiences such as:
- Executive functioning difficulties
- Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD)
- Alexithymia (difficulty recognising emotions)
- Sensory processing differences
- Masking
- Burnout
- Nervous system regulation
- Interoception
- Emotional regulation
- Self-understanding following diagnosis
For many people, simply understanding these experiences helps years of confusion begin to make sense.
Blending Professional Expertise with Lived Experience
My work combines evidence-based therapy, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), with specialist knowledge of ADHD and autism and my own lived experience of ADHD.
That combination allows me to recognise experiences that are often overlooked and explain them in ways that many clients find genuinely validating.
Many people tell me this is the first time they’ve felt their neurodivergent experiences have been understood rather than overlooked.
What This Means In Practice
When you come to therapy you can expect:
Therapy at your pace
There is no pressure to open up before you’re ready. Trust develops over time.
Flexible communication
We work in whatever way feels most comfortable for you, whether that’s conversation, visual explanations, written notes or practical strategies.
Sensory-friendly sessions
Lighting, sound and the environment can all be adapted to support your sensory needs.
Understanding rather than judgement
You won’t need to justify your communication style, explain why certain situations feel overwhelming, or pretend you’re coping when you’re not.
Therapy Is a Collaborative Process
Therapy is not about fixing who you are.
It is about understanding how your brain works, recognising your strengths, reducing self-blame, and developing practical strategies that genuinely fit your life.
Rather than asking:
“What’s wrong with me?”
Many clients leave therapy asking:
“What makes sense now that I understand how my brain works?”
That shift in understanding often becomes the foundation for meaningful and lasting change.
Is This Approach Right For You?
This approach may be helpful if:
- You’ve had therapy before but still felt misunderstood.
- You’re newly diagnosed or exploring ADHD or autism.
- You’re exhausted from masking.
- You don’t always know what you’re feeling.
- You don’t realise you’re overwhelmed until it’s too late.
- You constantly question yourself.
- Generic advice has never quite fitted the way your brain works.
