ADHD Support – Before & After Diagnosis

ADHD Support – Before & After Diagnosis

Understanding ADHD Before and After Diagnosis

Whether you’re questioning if you might have ADHD, waiting for an assessment, or adjusting to a recent diagnosis, this stage can bring a mixture of emotions.

For some people there is relief.

For others there is grief for the years spent not understanding themselves.

Many experience validation, self-doubt, anger, hope, or simply feel overwhelmed by the amount of information suddenly available.

Receiving a diagnosis doesn’t instantly answer every question.

For many people, it’s the beginning of understanding themselves in a completely new way.

My role is to help you make sense of that journey.

Rather than simply focusing on symptoms, we’ll explore how ADHD has shaped your experiences, relationships, work, self-esteem and daily life, while developing practical strategies that genuinely fit the way your brain works.

What ADHD Therapy Can Help With

Every person’s experience of ADHD is different, but common areas we explore include:

  • Understanding how ADHD shows up uniquely in your life.
  • Making sense of your diagnosis and what it means for you.
  • Executive functioning difficulties, including planning, organisation and decision paralysis.
  • Emotional regulation and Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD).
  • Alexithymia and understanding your emotions.
  • Burnout, overwhelm and nervous system regulation.
  • Masking and the impact of years spent trying to fit in.
  • Anxiety, depression or low self-esteem that may have developed alongside undiagnosed ADHD.
  • Building routines and strategies that actually work for your brain.

Before Diagnosis

You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy.

Many people begin therapy because they recognise ADHD traits long before they decide whether to pursue an assessment.

Together we can:

  • Explore your strengths and challenges in a supportive, non-judgemental space.
  • Understand patterns that may have been present throughout your life.
  • Develop practical strategies that improve everyday life regardless of diagnosis.
  • Discuss what an assessment involves and help you prepare if you decide to pursue one.

Therapy is about understanding yourself, not proving anything.

After Diagnosis

Receiving a diagnosis often answers one question but raises many others.

People commonly ask:

“Who would I have been if I’d known sooner?”

“What does this mean for my future?”

“Why does everything suddenly make sense?”

Therapy provides space to process those questions while also helping you move forward.

Together we can:

  • Make sense of your diagnosis.
  • Understand how ADHD has influenced different areas of your life.
  • Reduce self-blame and challenge years of internalised criticism.
  • Adapt your routines and environment to support your needs.
  • Build practical strategies for work, relationships and everyday life.
  • Develop confidence in your neurodivergent identity rather than constantly trying to fit in.

My Approach

Many adults tell me they have attended therapy before but still felt misunderstood.

My approach is different because therapy adapts to you—not the other way around.

Alongside evidence-based approaches including CBT, I also recognise experiences that are often overlooked in traditional therapy, including executive functioning, masking, burnout, Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, alexithymia, sensory processing and nervous system regulation.

Many clients tell me this is the first time they’ve felt their neurodivergent experiences have been understood rather than overlooked.
